Welcome to Prof. Bhaskaran Muralidharan's Computational Nanoelectronics & Quantum Transport (CNQT) Group!

Principal Investigator

Prof. Bhaskaran Muralidharan is an Inani Chair Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India. He obtained his B.Tech. degree in Engineering Physics from IIT Bombay in 2001 and his M. S. and Ph. D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. From 2008-2012, he was a post-doctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA, and at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Regensburg, Germany. He joined IIT Bombay in May 2012 as an Assistant Professor, and since May 2021, he has been a full Professor. During his tenure as a faculty member at IIT Bombay, he has received numerous awards, including the APS-IUSSTF professorship award, the Excellence in teaching award from IIT Bombay, the Shastri Indo-Canada fellowship, and the SERB-STAR award from the Government of India. His core research interests include computational quantum transport and its applications to modeling and simulation of “Beyond Moore” devices. His research output spans diverse areas of emerging and exploratory nanoscale devices, ultimately built on top of a broad and fundamental foundation of utilizing quantum transport for novel functionalities.

Ph.D. Students

Shrushti Tapar

Bio: Shrushti graduated from Govt. College of Engineering Amravati, Maharashtra, in 2012 with a B.Tech. (IN), followed by a Master (ECE) from HVPN, Maharashtra. She joined the Ph.D. in 2020 in Solid State Devices in the Electrical Engineering Department at IIT Bombay.
Research Area: Modeling and simulation of 2D-materials-based devices
Research Interest: Exploration of valleytronics, straintronics, and magnetotransport in topological materials, graphene, and TMDCs

Swastik Sahoo

Bio: Swastik graduated in 2009 from BPUT Rourkela, Odisha, with a B.Tech. (ECE) followed by a Masters (ECE) from IIT Kharagpur, India. He joined the CNQT Group, Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay as a Ph.D. research scholar in 2020.
Research Area: Modeling and Simulation of 2D-Material-based Devices
Research Interest: Exploration of straintronics in 2D Xenes and potential NEMS applications, Spin-based transport in Xenes and TMDCs

Pooja Kawde

Bio: Pooja graduated from YCCE Nagpur, Maharashtra, in 2015 with a B.E. in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, followed by an M.Tech. in VLSI Design from VNIT Nagpur in 2019. She joined Ph.D. in 2020, in the CRNTs at IIT Bombay.
Research Area: Dark current modeling and simulations for novel T2SL-based infrared photodetectors
Research Interest: Infrared Photodetectors, III-V-based optoelectronic devices

Rohit Kumar

Bio: Rohit obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics from the University of Delhi, India in 2015. Subsequently, he received his Master’s degree in Electronic Science from the Department of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Engineering & Technology at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. In 2020, he joined the Electrical Engineering department at IIT Bombay as a Doctoral Research Fellow. Prior to starting his Ph.D. at IIT Bombay, he served as a Junior Research Fellow in the Electrical Engineering department at IIT Kanpur. He has interned with the VLSI Lab, SSPL-DRDO, New Delhi and NISE, Gurugram, Haryana, during his master summer project.
Research Area: Modeling and atomistic simulations of IR detectors, Semiclassical and non-equilibrium quantum transport in 2D materials and devices
Research Interest: Computational Nanoelectronics, Nanoscale device modeling and atomistic simulations, Novel 2D materials and Quantum devices, Light-matter interaction

Saumya Gupta

Bio: Saumya Gupta is a Senior Research Fellow (SRF-UGC). She completed her Masters degree in Electronics from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, in 2018 and her Bachelors in Science (Electronics) from Allahabad University in 2016. She has also worked at CSIR-National Physical Laboratory during her masters project. She joined IIT Bombay as a Junior Research Fellow in 2020.
Research Area: Neuromorphic Spintronic device modeling and simulation for application in neural networks
Research Interest: Spintronic device application for real-time machine learning tasks

Sundeep Kapila

Bio: Sundeep obtained his B.Tech. degree in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) from IIT Bombay in 2001. Sundeep is also a co-founder and CEO of the Swasth Foundation. He joined the Solid State Devices, Department of Electrical Engineering, for his Ph.D. in July 2021.
Research Area: Quantum computing and information processing, Analysis of Qubits
Research Interest: Quantum Technology, Non-Equilibrium Quantum Transport, Bio-sensors

Rahul Awale

Bio: Rahul completed his B.E. degree from Nagpur University in 2013. He pursued two MS from MISIS (Russia) and UPSUD (France) in the field of Nanotechnology. Later, he joined the IITB-Monash Ph.D. program in July 2022.
Research Area: 2D Quantum FET for low-power electronics
Research Interest: Nanoelectronics devices, Device Physics and Simulations

Aparajita Modak

Bio: Aparajita completed her B.Tech. in Radio Physics and Electronics (post-Physics Hons) from the University of Calcutta. She received her M.Tech. from NIT Silchar on Microelectronics and VLSI design. In 2021, she joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay as a Ph.D. research scholar. Aparajita was awarded the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship in July 2022.
Research Area: Quantum computing and information processing
Research Interest: Quantum Controlled Sensors, Qubit noise modeling, Quantum transport, Spectroscopy

Shivam Maharaj

Bio: Shivam obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from St. Edmund College, Shillong, and his M.Sc. in Physics from NIT Rourkela in 2023. He joined the CNQT Group, Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay as a Ph.D. research scholar in 2023.
Research Area: Semi-classical carrier transport in 2D materials, MXenes for wireless communications
